I’m about to go to bed, but I’ve run out of icon requests in case anyone has any for me to work on tomorrow on the homeicons blog.
Of course, by now, most people who want custom tumblr icons probably already have them so I kind of expect interest to drop, but I’m available if anyone wants anything specific.
It’s been kind of fun getting better at making these over these past couple days, though! I wouldn’t have thought I could pull ANY of these off a few days ago. Well, maybe Arkansas. I’m pretty sure I would have just assumed that I could do that one. But the rest, not so much.
And of course, if anyone wants a certain combination together as a set of icons for home, ask, help, settings, and log out, I can mix and match. I just can’t change the missing e logo into something else. As far as I know.
I think I’ve figured out my image hosting issues. I’ve started a blog where all I’m going to do is upload the images, then I’ll link to where tumblr stores them. That shouldn’t be a problem, since it’s going from tumblr’s servers to our tumblr pages (it works so far).
I’ll be updating the scripts at userstyles.org with the new image URLs over the next hour or so. The only downside is that instead of having an image named “CastleIconTumblrBar.png” it will now be “tumblr_ma3u4tYKDD1rgncooo1_250.png” since tumblr names the files itself.
Sorry to any of you who had ugly boxes at the top of your tumblr page while photobucket wasn’t letting you pull the image!
After I finish that, I’ll get back to the requests I’ve got.
I didn’t think I’d be able to pull off a Madame Leota. I’m actually really happy about how it turned out.
I also like how she fades out when you’re not on your dash.
You can get Leota at http://userstyles.org/styles/73219/madame-leota-home-icon-for-tumblr
Next I want to try the Haunted Mansion buildings. I have no idea how I’m going to pull it off, or even if I’ll be able to. But I’m going to try.
OK, next in line is Andrew, who sent in his request for a Mickey Mouse Club logo.
This one was a little more challenging. I almost asked Andrew whether he wanted color or white, then decided to just do it both ways. I actually ended up with a few different versions.
First is the classic logo, in color.
You can install this style at http://userstyles.org/styles/73163/mickey-mouse-club-logo-home-icon-for-tumblr-blk
Then I did a version with white lettering, since the black lettering doesn’t stand out much.
But I do really like the idea of having just a white button there. I played around with the image a bit and came up with this version:
I’m not a huge fan of how that turned out, but it’s here if you want it: http://userstyles.org/styles/73188/mickey-mouse-club-monotone-home-icon-for-tumblr
I tried once more, this time changing the outer ring to just an outline. I like it a lot better.
Just like the Batman icons I did, use whichever you want…I’ll leave all versions active.
Next I work on the Haunted Mansion icons. I saved those for last for two reasons:
- they’ll probably be the most difficult to make
- they’re the ones I’ve been most looking forward to making
Now that I’ve got my other requests taken care of, I can work on them without worrying about letting everything else fall by the wayside.
This was the easiest of my icon requests so far, so I knocked it out first.
The classic batman logo for stuffnjunkmose. Of course, anyone else is free to use them as well.
I ended up doing two versions; pick whichever you prefer.
First, I did the bat logo by itself:
This is available at http://userstyles.org/styles/73105/batman-home-icon-for-tumblr
Then I thought it would maybe look better with the border around it, so I did that one as well.
Making your own tumblr “home” icon
So…yeah. Wow. This was a pretty unexpected thing to wake up to.
So is this the part where tumblr contacts me to tell me I’ve violated some obscure term of service, a la missing e?
Makes me happy to have made something people like (especially because it wasn’t easy, starting with zero user script experience other than having missing e). I haven’t been feeling very useful lately, so it’s a bit of a boost for me.
In case any of you want to make your own groovy home icon, I’ll walk you through how I did it after the read more:
