It always catches me off guard when major accounts like this actually respond.

The new USA TODAY site format just bugs me. Yesterday, I couldn’t open links in a new tab (I usually do that so I can keep my place on the main page). Thankfully that seems to be fixed now.

But now, if I open up some music and then click the browser window to bring it back to the front, I lose my article. I tend to click on the side of the window (circled area in the image below) because there usually aren’t links there and it’s easy to accidentally open something. But now if I do that, their site thinks that I want to go back to the headlines below the “layer” that opens with the story. And this even happens if I opened the story in a new tab.

If I want to go back, I’ll just use the back button. Or close that tab to get back to my main page. Having to reopen articles that I accidentally closed kind of stinks.

The new design looks good enough, but the site has lost its ease of use in the process.
