…and after all this time, he’s STILL mischaracterizing what Obama said. What he said was:

“If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business—you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.”

Nowhere did he say that small business owners didn’t build their business. Nowhere did he claim that the government should get credit. He only acknowledged that behind every success, there are people who helped make it happen, from the teachers to the road-builders to supportive parents. Yet to Romney, this is worthy of ridicule if the only words you ever quote are “you didn’t build that” while counting on people not being smart enough to look at the context. Sadly, he was right that there are a lot of people who are not smart enough to look at context.
See, the difference between the candidates in this election is that Romney twists Obama’s words around in really weird ways to make them sound bad. And because a lot of people won’t actually check the source, they believe him. But if they did check the source, they would see that Mitt is lying.
Then Romney tells outright lies, which are publicly called out, and because a lot of people won’t actually check the source, they say “well, both of them do it.” But if they did check the source, they’d see that Mitt is the only one whose campaign is based on lie after lie after lie.
Because if Obama was telling all these lies, you’d think that the right-wingers would be able to provide examples. But they can’t, because those examples don’t exist. So they rely on the “I’m rubber, you’re glue” defense and grasp at straws. And somehow, that’s enough to be even in the polls.
Fortunately, the only poll that actually matters takes place on Tuesday.
