Mentioning the motel in that last drabble reminded me of something.
When I was visiting my buddy in L.A., and we drove down to Portillo’s in Buena Park to get food, we passed by a motel on Beach Blvd. that I used to stay at all the time. It was a bit more of a drive than the local places when I was working at Universal Studios (and living at universal Studios, except for motel nights), but it was the cheapest motel I’d found in Southern California (the ones near Universal were $62-80 per night depending on which one I could get a room at, and this one was $40…not bad for being less than a block from Knott’s Berry Farm) and it always had vacancies.
Well, I should say that we passed where it used to be. The Pioneer Motel sign was still up, but the buildings had been torn down, and it was now a vacant lot. I won’t say that a little piece of me died or anything like that, since it wasn’t my favorite part of my life…but there was a little bit of sadness that a place that I’d spent quite a bit of time at, and enjoyed compared to the nights sleeping in the old Carts Merch Warehouse or the manager’s office above the candy store, was now gone.
Oh well. The world moves on.
